I am well aware that many people out there only purchase music online and I might be telling on myself to let you know that I never have. No I have never bought one song off of iTunes, Rhapsody, Amazon or anyplace like that. The only time I have downloaded music is if it was a free download or is someone sent it to me. Call me nostalgic, but I still love the record store and I still love reading liner notes. The sad thing is that all the big records stores have closed in NYC.
For those of you who are reading this who don’t live here I know that sounds impossible. This is New York City after all. This is one of the music capitals of the world right? Dare I say, WRONG? Last year we lost our last two records stores. Virgin Megastores in Times and Union Squares shut their doors. Now all that’s left of them are big empty boxes and lots of memories, but not as memories as I had at Tower Records in both Lincoln Center and West 4th. Sigh... But I digress.
The point of this blog is to tell you that if you like records stores like me, now you can pick up a copy of The Quick & Dirty EP at Other Music in Manhattan. It’s smack across the street from the now defunct Tower Records on W. 4th street. What’s so special about being at this store? Well I think it’s only right that I’m in a store called Other Music since that’s what my music has been called almost since the beginning, but I’m cool with that. As you will see in the photo I don’t have my own section yet, but I’m just to the right of Betty Wright and Steve Wonder! Can’t be mad at that!
Yes my CDs have been in record stores before, but in a time when we are told that the record store is obsolete it means even more. Other is one of those records stores for people who really love music. You’re not going to find any junk in there. It’s a store for the music enthusiast so I know I’m in the right place.
I’m not going to wax too poetic about the whole thing, but I thought it was worth mentioning. First stop Other Music (NYC), next stop Amoeba Music (LA). Trust me, I’m thankful for all the digital outlets, but there’s nothing like going to the record store. Does my heart good and if it does your heart good then go on out and pick something up. Me and your favorite Other artists will love you for it!
